CHARACTER NAME: Stiles Stilinski
SERIES: Teen Wolf
CANON POINT: After 2.03 - Ice Pick
LOSS: The ability to suggest better plans, every time he tries he’ll lose his voice. He often suggests better plans with a higher outcome of success than others. His plans are for the benefit of everyone involved, without being able to suggest something better he’d feel very guilty. But at least he’ll still be able to shoot down ideas.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
STRENGTHS
“Yeah, that’s right. If I’m harboring your fugitive ass, it’s my house, my rules, buddy."
Loyalty, wit, resourcefulness and bravery are Stiles’ defining features. One of the very first things we see him do is drag his best friend Scott out on an adventure. When he gets caught by his father, Sheriff Stilinski, Scott hides. And Stiles doesn’t rat his friend out, instead he insists that he’s wandered out into the woods alone. He takes all the blame, rather than having his friend involve. He was the one who dragged Scott out after all, and thus he’s the one who takes all the blame. When he decides somebody is worth his loyalty, he will do anything for them. Stiles isn’t always happy about helping his friend, but he’ll do it anyway.
He’s sarcastic towards people he’s close to. He points out the flaws in Scott’s plans before he does them, thus sparing both of them a lot of trouble. And he often suggests better plans that are far more likely to work. Again, the loyalty factor comes into play. He feels responsible for what happened to Scott, and so he’s willing to plan alternative strategies to get the prefered end result. Stiles also seems to use jokes as a coping mechanism. When he’s taken by the Alpha, he cracks jokes about werewolf’s computer choices, trying to stall for time.
Stiles often uses what he has around him to his advantage. Which is incredibly helpful, since he’s a completely human character. He doesn’t have werewolf enhanced strength, speed or senses. So instead he uses facts or whatever weapon he has available to turn the tides in his favor. When Scott attacks him in the locker room, he sprays Scott down with a fire extinguisher. When Derek breaks into his house and starts threatening him, Stiles says that Derek is a fugitive and Stiles’ father is right downstairs. Both times he manages to get the situation under control.
Stiles admits when he’s afraid of something. He does so on several occasions, most of which involve Derek. But that doesn’t stop him from talking to Derek when the need arises. And even when he’s terrified, he’ll still look Derek in the eye and tell him why Stiles has control of the situation. During the finale of season 1 he’s still a completely normal human, but he gets involved in the fight with the Alpha.
WEAKNESSES
As much as loyalty is a strength, it’s also his biggest weakness. After Scott tried to kill him multiple times Stiles doesn’t turn his back. Instead he stays with his friend. He chains him up on a full moon, even though that was completely ineffective. He will literally do anything that could potentially help Scott. He sacrifices his own desires to keep Scott safe. And it’s not just Scott, when Lydia is attacked by the Alpha, Stiles doesn’t hesitate to go running into help her. Again, he puts himself in the metaphorical line of fire when he feels responsible for somebody’s problem.
He’s not the best liar, especially when he’s trying to keep up a lie he’s made in the past. When his father finds him and Scott in the woods again, he tries his hardest to get out of trouble. His problem is his lies contradict each other. When he’s caught this time he says he was looking for Scott’s inhaler, which he dropped the other night. It’s a clear contradiction from what he said when he was caught alone. Any attempt he makes at keeping his lies straight go horrendously.
He also doesn't have a particularly strong regard for rules. Which leads to Stiles attempting to get Scott drunk to get over Allison. How'd he get the alcohol in the first place? He stole it from his dad, it's important to note that both Scott and Stiles are only sixteen. Was this legal? No. Was it better than having Scott sulk? Not really, since his werewolfiness meant he couldn't get drunk. He's also willing to get his father drunk if it meant he could get a look at the Hale case files.
OPINIONS/ATTITUDES
He doesn’t believe that being a werewolf is the worst thing that can possibly happen to a person, unlike Scott who considers it a curse. He points out some of the perks that come along with the bite. But he does note the danger and tries his best to prepare Scott for it. He does get annoyed when Scott puts Allison or lacross ahead of pressing matters such as other people’s safety or Stiles’ safety. So he’s not always okay with Scott’s decisions.
When he cares about people he will go out of his way to make sure they’re safe. When Stiles is trapped in school with the Alpha hunting him and Scott he doesn’t want to call his father because he doesn’t want him in danger. He consistently puts other people in front of his own survival. This even carries over into his interaction with Derek who constantly threatens him with physical harm. Derek showed up, collapsed in front of his car and Stiles didn’t ignore him. He spent the entire day trying to get an antidote for the wolfsbane that Derek had been shot with. And when Derek tells him to cut off the poisoned limb Stiles looks horrified at the weapon he was given, but doesn’t throw it away.
QUIRKS
“Am I attractive to gay guys?”
He’s highly distractible and has trouble keeping focused. During his midterm for economics he details the entire history of male circumcision instead of anything pertaining to the course. He’s comfortable enough to ask his best friend if he’s attractive to gay guys, he’s even comfortable enough to ask an actual gay guy later. And in season 2 Stiles offers to make out with Scott.
He stays on the lacrosse team, despite the fact that he’s never actually played a game. When he was finally going to play as first line, he didn’t go. Instead he went with Derek to find out who the Alpha was. Despite how excited he was to actually play for once, he still prioritizes the safety of others over his own desires.
ABILITIES: He's a completely normal, squishy human. The only weapons he has are his intelligence and wit. He is a very good researcher, being able to discover exactly what happened when Scott was bitten. Stiles is also good at reading people, able to see the the facade of ditz that Lydia kept going for years.
